Meet Me At Midnight

So, Meira just reminded me about a wickedly wonderful idea I had too late last year to do anything about.

Wouldn't it be fun to put the word out that all the dancers (would it be too cold to drum?) meet at midnight at some central, public place for a few minutes at Midnight to dance in the New Year. By one of the fountains, perhaps? Or at Union Station?

Who'll join me?

I'd even be happy to host a New Year's hafla leading up to the -- brrr! (but fun) -- outdoor dancing event.

YOU WILD ONE YOU! What a fantastic idea! Let's hope the weather cooperates. What would be the best location that wouldn't be total chaos?

I think that would depend on who's coming, and whether we're all meeting at my place beforehand.

There's a beautiful fountain on a rise over the highway and a busy intersection near my house. The city lets the water flow during the winter, and it turns into the most fantastic ice shapes. Lots of people go there to take winter photos. But there wouldn't be many people around to see us. There would be more people at Union Station, which is a traditional Kansas City New Year's gathering place, but I've never been there on New Year's Eve, so I don't know what the parking situation would be like.

I was thinking it would be fun to send out a press release in advance, so we could maybe get some news coverage. New Year's is traditionally a slow news night, so we stand a chance of getting some coverage.

Thinking about joining us? I know you're a WILD ONE. LOL!

Banat el Shamal has conferred. Two of us have other committments, but the rest of us plan to meet at the giant Christmas Tree at Zona Rosa at the stroke of midnight to dance in the New Year. It'll be cold, but we can always duck into one of the many fine eating and drinking establishments in the area to warm up afterward. Join us! It'll be loads of crazy fun.

Darn. I would love to join you but that is just too far from me - I'm in Olathe.

Ok, so now I feel like a wuss. I really do want to come...how long is everyone planning to dance? Any plans for afterwards - like going for hot toddies?

This is all very free-form, but I figured that after dancing (how long we dance probably will depend on the weather), we can pop into one of the restaurants at Zona Rosa for a post-midnight toast or hot toddie or whatever sounds appealing at the time.

Okay, I need to know. Is anyone for sure going to meet me?

My main partner in crime here is Meira, and she's under the weather. No one else has committee for sure that I know of. A number of dancers have told me they've decided not to come. And to top things off, my daughter's down with a gastrointestinal bug, and I'd have to leave my husband at home to stay with her. I'll do it, if I know there will be others going. But I need to know others will be there.

All is not lost. Isabella is feeling better. I think it may just have been too much fun and too many sweets over the holidays catching up with her.

Sigh. I think this is a crazy idea that wasn't meant to be. The cold is scaring everyone off, at least everyone who has contacted me thus far. At this point, the only person I haven't heard back from is Satowi, and I don't know how to get hold of her off list. Can anyone put me in touch with her? Or pass the word along for me that the dancing at midnight is off?

So ... after I heard from almost everyone who said they would come, and they all were cancelling due to illness and concern about the cold, I started calling and e-mailing the "maybes." I get hold of Masani on her cell phone, and she's actually in Olathe at Showleh's. Siham was coming over later, and she was actually going to suggest they all come up to join me. Masani is da bomb!

But I told her -- with no one really committing -- I'd called it off for this year. And she said, "Let's do it on the Ides of March!"

I bet this was fun. hell, it is never too cold to drum. I have had frost on the outside of my drum and I was still going at it at an SCA event this past October. Never too cold to bloody drum. Thank God for Mylar heads! I hope you guys had fun. Belly dancing for New years, i love the idea.

Maybe you can help make it happen for real next year?

Everyone got warm and cozy at home or wherever their New Year destination was, and enthusiasm for the idea died the closer it got to midnight.

I think to do it right next year, I should hold the hafla on New Year's close to the outdoor dancing site, so that everyone's there and we can run out really quickly to drum and dance i the cold and back inside to toast in the New Year.
